Primary 5
May News
Our theme for May will be Whales and Migration. We’ll explore questions like:
What is migration?
What are the parts of a gray whale?
How do whales sleep?
In Geography, we’ll dive into learning about South America—its people, culture, traditions, map, flag, and the mighty Amazon River.
In Zoology, we’ll study the different parts of whales, butterflies, birds, and fish.
For Art, we’ll explore Eric Carle’s "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", and end the month by creating beautiful butterfly art inspired by the book.
April Recap
In April, our theme focused on Islands and Volcanoes. We discovered that volcanoes erupt when hot, melted rock called magma, which comes from deep within the Earth, builds up pressure and pushes its way to the surface. Once it erupts, the magma is called lava. Lava can flow out as liquid rock or be blasted into the air as ash and gases.
We also had a blast with a fun volcano science experiment! Using baking soda, vinegar, and red food coloring, we simulated a volcanic eruption. The chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar creates carbon dioxide gas, causing a bubbly, eruption-like effect that everyone enjoyed.
In Geography, we learned about Australia, a fascinating continent home to many unique animals like the koala, kangaroo, echidna, platypus, colorful birds, and turtles. For our craft project, we made adorable joeys (baby kangaroos) complete with their pouches.
We also read the beloved book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom". This alphabet story is full of vibrant artwork, bouncy rhymes, repetition, and playful personification of letters—making it both educational and fun!!
March Recap
For the month of March, our theme focused on the fascinating world of dinosaurs. We learned that dinosaurs were large, prehistoric animals that roamed the Earth long before humans ever existed. Some dinosaurs were as big as a car, while others were as small as a dog! We also explored their diets, discovering that some dinosaurs were herbivores (plant eaters) and others were carnivores (meat eaters). We discussed how scientists study dinosaur fossils (bones) to learn more about these incredible creatures.
In geography, we focused on the continent of Africa. The children learned that Africa is often shown as green on maps because more than half of the continent is covered by grasslands. We also explored the incredible diversity of wildlife found in Africa, including elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, and both white and black rhinoceroses.
Throughout the month, we enjoyed reading several Dr. Seuss books, such as The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish Two Fish, and Fox in Socks. For our science activity, we learned about growing green mung beans. The children soaked the beans overnight, placed them in a bag taped to a window to get plenty of light, and kept them damp with water. Once the beans sprouted, we planted them in soil and continued to care for them as they grew.
February Recap
This month, we’ve been focusing on awareness and the value of friendship. We discussed what it means to be a friend, how to be a good friend, and what friendship truly represents. In Geography, we explored Asia, learning about countries like India, China, and Japan, and delving into the diverse cultures, people, and traditions that make each country unique.
In Art, we celebrated the Lunar New Year by creating artwork, including coloring the flags of China and India. For Science, we studied the water cycle, learning how the sun warms water in puddles, causing it to evaporate into the sky as water vapor. This vapor then cools, forms clouds, and eventually falls back to Earth as rain, continuing the cycle. We also read Little Blue and Little Yellow to explore how colors mix and created art projects based on the book.
January Recap
This month, our theme has been Winter, Ice, and Snow. We've explored the different winter clothes we wear to stay warm, such as jackets, raincoats, boots, and scarves. We also learned about the unique animals of Antarctica, like penguins, seals, and blue whales, and how they have adapted to survive in the extreme cold. For example, we discovered a fish with clear blood that prevents it from freezing in icy waters.
We also discussed the concept of hibernation. Some animals, like bears, enter a deep sleep during the winter, which helps them conserve energy and survive without needing to eat much.
In science, we demonstrated how ice is made: fill a dish with room temperature water, place it gently in the freezer, and wait until the water turns into ice.
For music, the children were introduced to Beethoven and had the opportunity to listen to two of his pieces. They also participated in a rhythm stick activity to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.
December Recap
For the Month of December our theme is about celebrations around the world (Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas). For Geography we discussed Europe. Facts about Europe: Europe is the second smallest continent with many countries. The continent that is east of the Atlantic Ocean, to the North of the Mediterranean, and to the west of Asia. For Zoology we discussed parts of the Horse such as mane, head, neck, fore legs, hind legs, and tail). For art we made pinecone, Menorah, ornament, and Christmas tree. We read The Giving Tree book and learned the importance of being a giver and a taker, you will often be the giver, but you should also be willing to take, expressing gratitude to people who help you is important.
November Recap
We had lots to be thankful for in Primary 5 as we approached Thanksgiving. Our class continued to grow and work together as a caring community.
Thank you to all the parents who attended Parent Teacher conferences. It was valuable to gain more insight into our amazing students and come up with goals to work on in the coming months. Our book of the month was To Fill a Bucket, we learned how kindness and caring fills us up and those around us. We also learned about the USA and some things that make where we live so special.
October Recap
Our theme was Solar Systems and Space. The children were so excited to learn about all eight planets in our solar system. Did you know, the planets orbit the sun in a flattened circle called an ellipse. The order of the planets from the sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. In Geography we talked about North America and what kind of animals and plants are in North America. We also learned that Canada, Mexico, New York City, and Los Angeles are big cities in North America.
Fall is a fun season, and we can experience so many fun things. Cooler temperatures, changing leaves, hot chocolate, and of course pumpkins. We carved a Halloween pumpkin, talked about parts of the pumpkin and had so much fun. Then we talked about foods and desserts that can be made with pumpkin and how good it is for our body and has vitamins and fiber.
September Recap
Hello Families Welcome to the New year 2024- 2025 school year! We are so excited about this school year. It began with so much fun, lots of learning and new adventures! In September we learned about our class, community and family. Our theme was All About Me, we are going to learn how to take care of ourselves and bodies, what are our favorite things to do, what we like or dislike.
In Geography, we learned about how many continents we have and their names, where we live in the world, continent songs, Oceans and the seas of the world. In science we learned about Magnetic and Nonmagnetic as well as living and nonliving. In practical life we began to learn different skills such as pouring, spooning, cutting, and water works.
We also started our Enrichment Programs the second week of this month, and our friends explored the Orchestra and learned what the purpose of a conductor is. They also learned the different sounds of the Orchestra and played a game trying to figure out which sound was which. The children also began Art and the "All About Me" theme and made a self Portrait from the example of Andy Warhol.
Summer 2024 Recap
Summertime was so much fun! We had all the tastes of summer, from water days to magical bubble shows and the always exciting end of the summer party to kick-off the start of a new school year. We learned about sea life, outer space, life on the farm, and how each one of us is unique and special. We had some fun activities with our in-house field trips. We had a silly science show, jumps houses and a reptile show.
To top off the end of such a fun summer we had an End of the Summer Party. This included a fun Foam party, balloon animals and a jump house. What a fun time for our families in P5 to get to know each other and say goodbye to our friends who are now moving on and up to Elementary school. Thank you for joining us for the best summer end ever!
